To talk about values in sport, we must first know what values are.

In our society, values are present at all times, our life is determined by our own ideology. Value is a polysemic word, so it has many meanings depending on the discipline that analyzes it:

  • Sociology: from a sociocultural point of view, values are fundamental, general and central aims and orientations of the human actions and coexistence social within a subculture, a culture or even in the whole of humanity. Values are determined by history, they are culturally relative and they change, and consequently they can be consciously shaped.
  • Social psychology: A value is an enduring belief in that a specific mode of conduct or end state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite mode of conduct or end state of existence.
  • Educational sciences: The values are the criteria, the thoughts, the decisions that allow clarifying and correcting what it is that should be promoted in a culture as educational so that human beings develop and improve, that is, educate themselves. In relation to the values in sport, we can classify them according to different types such as the most important, those that belong to sport, those that belong to physical education... as we can see in the following presentation.

These values should be promoted from the educational curricula of the different stages. In addition, we must make teachers aware of their importance in transmitting them, just like fathers and mothers, so their coordination is essential.

Finally, the characteristics and capacities of each student must be taken into account, in addition to the circumstances and context.
